Life After Retirement: Giving Back

Hi Beauties!
Two years before I was set to retire from the military, I decided to go back to school to obtain my degree in Business Administration.  My goal was to have it completed before I retired, but I had a few setbacks and was not able to get it completed. Nevertheless, I did not allow those setbacks to keep me from accomplishing my end goal.

In March 2015, I received my Bachelor’s Degree Cum Laude in Business Administration.  I retired after 20 years and 17 days in the United States Air Force. After my retirement, I knew that I wanted to do something that I enjoyed while also making a difference in the lives of others.  After spending eight months relaxing and mentally rejuvenating my body, my mind, and my soul, I decided that I wanted to become a teacher.  I could have easily gotten a Government Civilian job, but I wanted to do something different.  I have always had a gift of teaching, training, and directing people so I felt that the education system would be a great place to share my talents.  Sometime in July 2015, I received an email from my younger son’s school.  They were scouting to hire to for positions within the school system.  This job fair was open to the public and any interested person could apply.

So! I decided to step out on faith with nothing but my resume from previous jobs that I had held in the military, along my graduate transcripts.  To my surprise, both the principal and assistant principle of all the schools were there.  Fortunately, I had the opportunity to speak one on one with about six schools from the elementary to the high school levels.  From that conversation, in which I just basically introduced myself and gave them the background of my work history, two schools offered me an interview in that same day!  Awesome, right?  I felt so blessed to be afforded an opportunity to try my hand at something new and very different from anything that I have done in the past 20 years of my entire career.  After the interview, I received a call back indicating the details of the offer for the Paraprofessional position in the elementary school.

All in all, there is life after the military!  Sometimes all it takes is for you to be open to go in a different direction with your career path and doors will fling open.  I hope by reading my story that you will be encouraged to try something different and do something that you’ve never done…from a career standpoint.  Although there may be challenges, the joy and fulfillment will far outweigh them all.  Stay tuned as I share more details on my Life After Retirement journey.
